Pioneering township developer Megaworld is set to make history once again with the construction of a world-class museum inside its 30-hectare township, The Mactan Newtown, in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. Designed as a tribute to the island’s cultural pride and historical legacy, the ₱1.2-billion Mactan World Museum will soon rise along Newtown Boulevard, right in front of Megaworld’s 8 Newtown Boulevard residential condominium.
Furthermore, the museum will showcase an extensive collection of historical pieces curated by Dannie Alvarez, president of the Alliance of Greater Manila Museums, Inc. (AGMMI) and former head of the Committee on Museums of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). This remarkable collection will emphasize the deep friendship and enduring cultural exchange between the Philippines and Spain throughout the centuries.
In addition, the museum will provide a vivid retelling of key moments in history—from the journey and arrival of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in Mactan to his ultimate defeat at the hands of the fearless tribal leader Lapu-Lapu, as well as the rich Hispanic heritage shaped by the Manila Galleon trade. To enhance the visitor experience, the second floor will feature five main exhibit galleries, each highlighting collections, artifacts, replica mementos, and immersive virtual displays. Among the key themes to be explored are Spain’s quest for spices, the Kingdom of Sugbu, Magellan’s early expeditions, and the legendary Battle of Mactan.
Moreover, the museum will feature two state-of-the-art performance halls—a Flamenco Studio and a Multimedia Room—that can be seamlessly combined into one grand hall with a seating capacity of around 270 people. In this versatile space, visitors can look forward to experiencing vibrant Spanish dance performances and engaging short play productions that bring history to life. In addition, an immersive hall will offer guests a captivating audio-visual journey, showcasing significant historical events from the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines.
Significantly, the Mactan World Museum marks the fourth museum property that Megaworld is developing within its renowned townships, following the Chinatown Museum in Lucky Chinatown, the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA), and the Brandy Museum at Iloilo Business Park. Furthermore, this world-class cultural landmark is projected to open within the next three years, further strengthening Cebu’s position as a premier destination for history, culture, and heritage tourism in the Philippines.
