CBRT Launches March 13: Enjoy Free Rides for One Full Year

Big news for Cebu commuters: Riding the much-anticipated Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (CBRT) will be absolutely free for an entire year once its initial operations kick off on March 13, 2026.

This exciting announcement marks a major milestone for the city’s public transportation system. The one-year free ride period is designed to encourage public adoption of the modern bus system while allowing commuters to experience a faster, more reliable way to travel through some of Cebu’s busiest corridors.

A Collaborative Effort for Cebu Commuters

The rollout of the CBRT’s first operational segment is a joint initiative led by the Department of Transportation-Philippines (DOTr), in close coordination with the Cebu City Government, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board-Central Visayas (LTFRB 7), and the Land Transportation Office-Central Visayas (LTO 7).

This partnership underscores the commitment of national and local agencies to decongest Cebu City’s traffic and provide a world-class commuting experience.

Where Will the CBRT Operate?

The initial phase will utilize dedicated median lanes along key thoroughfares, ensuring that buses move swiftly without being caught in general traffic congestion. According to the transport agency, the following road segments will be partially closed to regular vehicles to accommodate the bus system’s exclusive lanes:

  • Natalio Bacalso Avenue: From the Cebu South Bus Terminal to Osmeña Boulevard
  • Osmeña Boulevard: Stretching up to Fuente Osmeña Circle

These dedicated lanes are critical to the system’s efficiency, allowing CBRT buses to maintain consistent schedules and offer a reliable alternative to private vehicles.

What This Means for Commuters

For daily commuters, the CBRT promises a transformative shift. With free rides for the first year, passengers have a risk-free opportunity to integrate this new mode of transport into their daily routines. Whether you’re heading to work, school, or running errands, the CBRT aims to cut travel time significantly along one of the city’s most congested routes.

Motorists are advised to plan their alternate routes accordingly, as the affected median lanes will be permanently designated for the bus system.

Looking Ahead

The launch on March 13 is just the beginning. The one-year free ride period is expected to generate valuable data on ridership patterns and system performance, paving the way for future expansions and improvements.

Stay tuned for more updates as Cebu City takes this bold step toward a smarter, more efficient public transportation future.
